DIY Sock Puppets: Fun & Easy Craft for Kids

Old socks lying around? Don’t toss them in the bin — give them a second life as playful sock puppets! This quick and eco-friendly craft is perfect for sparking creativity in kids (and adults too). Turbo loves using his sock puppets to act out silly farmyard stories… though Kevin the frog insists he deserves a starring role every time.

What You’ll Need

  • Clean old socks (longer socks work best)

  • Buttons, googly eyes, or fabric scraps for eyes

  • Yarn or ribbon for hair

  • Felt or fabric pieces for tongues, ears, or clothes

Needle & thread or craft glue

How to Make Them

  1. Choose Your Sock: Pick a clean, colourful sock. Slip it on your hand so the heel forms the puppet’s head.

  2. Add Eyes: Sew or glue on buttons, beads, or googly eyes.

  3. Make Hair: Use yarn, ribbon, or scraps of fabric.
Decorate: Add felt tongues, ears, or clothes to bring your character to life.

  4. Playtime: Create silly voices, tell stories, and put on a puppet show!

Sock puppets are proof that even the simplest items can spark hours of fun. Instead of throwing old socks away, turn them into characters for storytelling, play, and laughter. Gather the family, grab those odd socks, and get ready for some puppet-powered fun this weekend!

Turbo’s Tip
“Don’t make a duck puppet — you’ll never match my quacking skills!”

  2. In another pan, fry meatballs until golden brown (snails ready to roll!).

  3. Heat tomato sauce, then add meatballs to simmer.

  4. Drain spaghetti, pop onto a plate, and top with “snails” and sauce.

  5. Sprinkle grated cheese on top for extra yum.

Trash to Treasure: Tin Can Lanterns

“Quack hello, friends! Turbo here with another Trash to Treasure adventure. Today we’re turning boring old tin cans into twinkling lanterns that will make your garden glow like starlight. Let’s get quacking!”

Steps:

  1. Gather materials: Empty tin cans, hammer, nail, tea lights (or LED candles), wire (for handles, optional), paint.

  2. Prep the cans: Clean and remove labels. Fill with water and freeze (so the tin doesn’t bend when hammered).

  3. Punch designs: Use nail + hammer to tap out holes in patterns (stars, hearts, swirls).

  4. Decorate: Spray paint or hand-paint the cans in bright colours.

Light them up: Pop in candles or LEDs for a magical glow.

Tips:

  • Add wire handles to hang them in trees.

  • Use different tin sizes for a cluster effect.

  • Great for parties, Christmas, or just everyday charm!

Turbo's Tip

“Quack clever! Always freeze your tins with water inside before hammering your designs. It stops the can from squishing and keeps your stars and hearts looking perfect. And remember—LED tea lights are just as sparkly and much safer for little wings and paws!”

Turbo’s Trick-or-Treasure Rolls!

This week’s spooky-season craft is frightfully fun and planet-friendly!

Save those empty toilet rolls — they’re about to become the cutest little Halloween treat boxes.

 How to make them:

  1. Take a clean toilet roll and make four 1-inch cuts on the bottom of each end.

  2. Gently fold the cut sections inward — they’ll tuck into each other to create a neat little cube-shaped end.

  3. Repeat on the other side so both ends are closed.

  4. Decorate with spooky faces, stickers, or ribbon.

Pop in a small treat (a lolly, toy, or even a painted pebble) — then fold the top closed to keep the surprise inside!

These are perfect for trick-or-treaters, Halloween table favours, or as part of a fun family craft night. Best of all, they turn “trash” into treasure — Turbo style!
